Two words: graham crackers.
OmNOMnomNOMnomNOMnomNOMnom!!!!
Seriously, graham crackers are just one of those things that, when left to my own devices, I could easily eat a whole package of in one sitting.
I know I shouldn’t.
But sometimes I just can’t help myself!
If you suffer from this same problem, just know that you are not alone.
And that you can now enjoy a healthy, whole grain version of your favorite snack!
Granted, you probably still shouldn’t eat the entire batch in one sitting.
But I won’t tell if you don’t. 😉
Whole Wheat Graham Crackers
(Yields 2 baking sheets of crackers)
Ingredients:
- 2 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
- 1/8 cup date sugar (keep in mind that I don’t like things super sweet…so, if you have an extra sweet tooth you could up this to 1/4 cup)
- 1 tsp. aluminum-free baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. sea salt
- 1/2 to 1 tsp. cinnamon, according to taste
- 2 T raw honey
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
- 4 T virgin coconut oil, melted
- 4 T unsweetened applesauce
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, date sugar, baking powder, baking soda, sea salt, and cinnamon.
Add all of the remaining ingredients to the bowl and mix to form a ball of dough. You can add a tablespoon or two of additional water, if needed.
Divide the dough in half.
Place half the dough on a clean, lightly floured surface and roll out to your desired level of thickness. (The thinner the sheet of dough, the crispier the cracker!)
Transfer the dough to a greased baking sheet. Using a pizza cutter or knife, score the dough into rectangles.
Repeat the process with the remaining half of your dough.
Bake for fifteen to twenty minutes, or until the crackers are just beginning to brown.
Transfer the crackers to a wire rack to cool.
Enjoy with a cold glass of fresh milk…smear them with your favorite nut butter or this awesome chocolate chip cookie dough dip…make smores…or use the dough to make a nommy, healthy whole grain pie crust!
This looks so great!!! I am addicted to graham crackers too. Lately I’ve been savoring Digestive Biscuits. A whole grain version would be great to make!
Thanks so much for the compliments! I can verify that they TASTE great, too! 😉 I bet you could definitely make a whole grain version of Digestive Biscuits! They have such a similar taste to graham crakers that you could probably use this recipe…just don’t roll out the dough quite as thin and then cut it into circles! Let me know if you try it! 🙂
