So, remember in my last post when I told you that we enjoyed our Green Pea and Mint Hummus smeared on homemade whole wheat naan??
Well, you didn’t think I’d leave you without a recipe for that awesome nomminess, did you?!
Of course not!
I guess it goes without saying that I’m pretty obsessed with food (exhibit A: this blog). However, I have to admit that I have always held a special, ultra obsession with bread.
All things bread.
Bagels, pitas, baguettes, biscuits, muffins, rolls, toast…
…and naan.
Ohhhhhhhhh, naan…if you’ve never had it, it’s basically a quilt of pastry goodness that is somehow tender, chewy, and crispy all at the same time!
I knoooooooooow.
OMnomNOMnomNOMnomNOMnomNOMnomNOMnom!!!!!
For those of you that have never experienced the absolute deliciousness that is naan, here’s a great whole grain recipe to get you started!
Naan + Hummus = extremely happy tummy |
Whole Wheat Naan
(Yields 8 pieces of naan)
Ingredients:
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. aluminum-free baking powder
- Sea salt, according to taste
- 1/2 tsp. date sugar (or sweetener of choice)
- 1 cup yogurt whey (you could also use milk or a mix of milk and yogurt)
- Extra virgin olive oil, optional
- Spices of your choice (basil, oregano, cumin, coriander, etc.), optional
In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, sea salt, and date sugar. Stir to mix well.
Slowly add the yogurt whey while stirring until a large ball of smooth dough forms.
Cover the dough with a damp, clean cloth and allow it to set for about 45 minutes to an hour.
Brush the dough with extra virgin olive oil and spices, if desired. Transfer to a grill and heat for about two to three minutes on each side.
This naan is addictively nommy all on its own, but you can also use it wherever your creative imagination takes you: spread with hummus or pesto, use as a personal pizza crust, layer with sandwich goodies and fold for a sandwich “taco”…or “naanwhich,” if you will. 🙂
Are you a bread lover, too?? What’s your favorite doughy confection??
